Dr. Arnold of Miami Florida is a neonatologist and healthcare simulation leader.  She is passionate about the incorporation of simulation into healthcare as a tool to improve patient safety and outcomes.  Dr. Arnold is currently the Medical Director of a state-of-the-art simulation center at Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital in St. Petersburg, Florida.

Education: Dr. Arnold completed her undergraduate degrees in Biology and Psychology at the University of Miami in Florida. She then completed her medical degree at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in Baltimore, MD and graduated in 2000. She attended a Pediatric Residency Program at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh. During her fellowship in neonatology, she obtained a Master of Science in Medical Education from the University of Pittsburgh. She is Board Certified in Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine.  She was a NIH postdoctoral scholar at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine’s Safar Center for Resuscitative Medicine from July 2006-July 2007 (NIH Training Grant # T32 HD40686).

Accomplishments: Dr. Arnold has over 20 peer reviewed publications.  She has spoken both nationally and internationally on healthcare simulation education and has made numerous inspirational speeches for avenues such as the Texas Conference for Women, Shiners Hospital, March of Dimes and many more. She has received numerous awards including the Ray E. Helfer Award for innovation in medical education from the Academic Pediatric Association, Compassionate Doctor Recognition in 2010, 2011 and Patients’ Choice Award for 2008, 2009, 2010, and 2011 from Vitals.com. She is an active member of the American Academy of Pediatrics, Academic Pediatric Association, Society for Simulation in Healthcare, the Children’s Hospital Association, and has served as a national ambassador for Speak Now For Kids.

Media: Dr. Arnold and her husband Bill (and their children Will and Zoey) are featured on TLC’s docu-drama, The Little Couple, which follows their personal and professional lives and is now in its 7th season! She has also appeared on television programs including Oprah, The Today Show, GMA, Dr. OZ, The Doctors, Wendy Williams, Anderson Cooper and CNN among others. The show has also proven to be an invaluable method to break down barriers and educate people around the world about people with disabilities.

Dr. Bishop earned her PhD in social psychology from the University of Texas at Austin in 1989 and is currently Professor Emeritus at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston, School of Nursing as of 2019. She has also served as faculty at the University of Texas Medical Branch’s Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, and the International Space University, Strasbourg, France. As an internationally recognized behavioral researcher in extreme environments, for the last 25 years Dr. Bishop has investigated human performance and group dynamics in teams in extreme, unusual environments, involving deep cavers, mountain climbers, desert survival groups, polar expeditioners, Antarctic winter-over groups and various simulations of isolated, confined environments for space, including a number of missions at remote habitats (e.g., Mars Desert Research Station, Utah, HiSEAS in Hawaii and the FMARS and Mars Project on Devon Island, Canada). She has been a grant reviewer for the European Space Agency’s Concordia Station, the Canadian Space Agency’s Life Science Directorate, the Australian Antarctic Science Division, and the Czech Science Foundation. She has over 60 publications (including contribution to NASA’s Historical Series on Psychology in Space) and over 50 scholarly presentations in both the medical and psychological fields. She is frequently sought out as a content expert by various media and has participated in multiple television documentaries on space and extreme environments by Discovery Channel, BBC and 60 Minutes.

Dr. Chisholm teaches nursing in the prelicensure and graduate program in the Dishman School of Nursing at Lamar University, Beaumont, TX and serves as Director of the Edna Horn Gay Learning Center: Simulation Program and Support Staff. Dr. Chisholm teaches prelicensure clinical nursing skills, graduate curriculum, and serves as Project Director for graduate evidence-based projects. Dr. Chisholm serves as Co-Chair of the Curriculum Committee and has assisted in leading the SON through two successful ACEN accreditation cycles. Currently, Dr. Chisholm is working with a team to obtain accreditation of the SON Simulation Center from the Society for Simulation in Healthcare (SSH). Dr. Chisholm’s current research projects include patient safety, teamwork, incorporation of self-healing material in simulation manikin skin, creating IoT solutions to promote preventative healthcare in rural East Texas, and student learning outcomes associated with the use of high-fidelity simulation in nursing education.

LeAnn J. Chisholm

Dr. Sundgren earned his MD and PhD at Oregon Health & Science University in Portland, Oregon. He went to the University of Texas Southwestern in Dallas, Texas for Residency training in Pediatrics followed by a Fellowship in Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine. It was there at the University of Texas Southwestern and Parkland Memorial Hospital that he developed his love for neonatal resuscitation. He is now the Director if neonatal resuscitation education at Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston, Texas and with Baylor College of Medicine. He has done several studies using simulation to learn more about best practices in neonatology and resuscitation.
